TaskforceNL Introduces Community Partner to Continue its Work with Employers and Newcomers

December 14, 2023

St. John's, NL — After two years of helping connect newly arrived immigrants with employment opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador, TaskforceNL is excited to turn over its work to Amal Youth and Family Centre Inc. of St. John’s. With its much broader resource base, Amal will build on the foundation laid by TaskforceNL over the past two years.

TaskforceNL was formed during a time of unprecedented global crisis during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic to enable the local production of personal protective equipment. Since then, it has evolved to focus on helping employers in this province find workers with a broad range of skill sets and experiences.

TaskforceNL Co-Chair Victoria Belbin stated “TaskforceNL has been privileged to be able to work on identifying and addressing our province’s urgent need for effective immigrant employment solutions. We brought together diverse stakeholders, including community partners, municipalities, and employers across the province, and fostered an environment where we were able to bring our discussions to life. Our work has benefitted Newfoundland and Labrador’s economy and communities, and provided new jobs and homes for people facing incredible upheaval.”

Looking Ahead and Expanding the Vision

Belbin continued “We are delighted to announce Amal’s involvement. It is a caring organization that aligns perfectly with our mission and values. Amal has the resources to continue and expand on our efforts, connecting immigrants with meaningful employment opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Heather Modlin, Chief Executive Officer of Amal, shared in the excitement for carrying on the work of TaskforceNL. "The handing over of this vision and work from TaskforceNL to Amal is a testament to the commitment both organizations have to making a lasting impact in our community. We see incredible opportunities here to benefit everyone involved, and contribute to our province, its people, and our economy.”

Advisory Roles and Organizational Transition

TaskforceNL will continue in an advisory role, providing guidance and support until Amal is ready to take it over fully. This marks a strategic evolution of both organizations, focusing on sustainable impact and community empowerment.

In noting the changing roles, Belbin spoke glowingly of the support that made it all possible. “We owe a huge thank you to the current and past board members, and the employees of TaskforceNL, for formulating the initial vision and bringing it to life. And we say thank you as well to the partners and volunteers who helped make it all happen. Because of all of their contributions, companies and communities have grown, and people from around the world have found a new home right here in the province.”

Modlin added “TaskforceNL's journey is a shining example of how collaboration and commitment can bring about meaningful change. As Amal now takes the reins, we look forward to the continued positive impact on immigrant employment in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
